Mason Jar Decor

Like many of my projects, I did this one while I should have been working on something else.  Having cut and painted too much trim for my bathroom mirror, I thought, what can I do with these little pieces?  I have a bunch of old mason jars that I’d been planning on doing something with so I figured one of these jar crafts would be a good start.   Using a couple of scrap wood pieces, left over trim, spray paint, hose clamps and mason jars, I made these little jar holder plaque’s.  (I have no idea what these really are)

How I did it

  1. After deciding on the size (by going through scraps), I painted the front of the backs white, and the sides black
  2. I didn’t have quite enough excess trim, so I cut and painted a bit more to create the borders.
  3. Applied polyurethane to the painted front and trim. (I have no idea if this is necessary, I just did this because they were for a small humid bathroom)
  4. Glued trim to the front sides of the board.
  5. Painted my jars. (I did the bottoms dark grey and the top a silver glitter spray that overlapped the grey.)
  6. Screwed hose clamps to the center of the front of the board
  7. Attached/tightened the hose clamps around the jars.

What I Learned

  • If painting the wood, it’s probably best to use nicer pieces.  I was thinking it wouldn’t matter as they’d be rustic, but I think the only way to pull that off would be to leave the wood.  Painting completely changed the look.
  • With the painted wood, the hose clamps would look better painted. I said I’d go back and do them, but honestly, I still haven’t gotten around to it.  The silver probably would have gone well with the rustic wood.
  • The trim would have looked better with the corners cut at a 45 degree angle. I thought I had a little plan with the longer ends, but not liking the look.  I should have taken the extra time to do the corners correctly.

Results

Despite my complaints, I was happy with how they turned out.  As UNcrafty as I am, anything that gets to completion is an accomplishment and if it holds together a month later, I’m thrilled.  They’re not the most beautiful, but they matched and painting the glass inspired my shelf jars.

My favorite response so far is my dad asking what they do.
